Exchange Server 2007 on Windows Server 2008

09/19/2007

Thank you Shijaz Abdulla for this article

Some interesting facts on running Exchange Server 2007 on the upcoming RTM version of Windows Server 2008.

  • Running Exchange Server 2007 RTM on Windows Server 2008 RTM is not supported
  • You will need to upgrade to Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 if you want to run Exchange 2007 on Windows Server 2008 RTM
  • You can't install Exchange Server 2007 Management Tools on Windows Vista unless you have Exchange Server 2007 SP1

If you already have Exchange Server 2007 installed on Windows Server 2003:

  • You CANNOT upgrade Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008 on a computer running Exchange Server 2007 and then upgrade to Exchange 2007 SP1
  • You CANNOT upgrade Exchange Server 2007 to Exchange Server 2007 SP1 on a computer running Windows Server 2003 and then upgrade to Windows Server 2008
  • Yikes! So how are you going to upgrade anyway? Here's the answer: you need to build a fresh Windows Server 2008 machine and install Exchange Server 2007 SP1 on it. (Ouch!)
  • Clustered Mailbox Servers: Due to immense differences in Windows Server 2008 clustering from Windows Server 2003, you CANNOT do a rolling upgrade of an Exchange Server 2007 cluster. The only way out is to build a fresh failover cluster with Windows Server 2008 running on all nodes and then use Move Mailbox to migrate data to the new cluster. (Ouch again!)

Early adopters of Exchange Server 2007 looking to also early-adopt Windows Server 2008 may now find themselves slightly challenged, given all the above parameters.

If you have Exchange Server 2003 installed on a domain that contains Windows Server 2008 RODCs (Read Only Domain Controllers):

  • Do NOT force Exchange Server 2003 to use RODCs or ROGCs. Not supported and 'unexpected' behaviour 'expected'.
  • Exchange Server 2003 when in the default "auto" mode (i.e. set to automatically use any available DC) will not try to use an RODC or ROGC.

At the time of writing this post, Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 is in Beta 2 and is available in MSDN/Technet subscriptions only.

Script to export Distribution List members to a text file

09/19/2007

This article explains how to export members of Exchange distribution lists into a text file using VBScript.

UPDATE: This article became a Microsoft Knowledge Base Article (KB 555937) on July 9, 2007

Background:

Some of the funny yet small limitations of Exchange Server/Active Directory is the absence of a simple feature that lets you export the names of people who are members of a particular distribution list. So I went ahead and wrote my little script that lets you do this. You can run this script directly from the server or any domain workstation. On workstations however, make sure that you have the LDIFDE.EXE tool in the system path.

The steps in extracting the information is as follows. Using a batch file, extract a Distribution List in LDF format using LDIFDE. This will include the distribution list members, but the output will not be formatted the way we want it – each line would start with the word “member:” and will contain the full LDAP Path. We are interested in only the display names of the users. So we write another VBS script that opens the LDF file and cleanses the data by removing the “member:” prefix and the unwanted portion of the LDAP Path. In the end we just have a normal list of display names of the users.

Step 1:     Write the batch file that runs LDIFDE against your Active Directory. Save the file as ExportDL.BAT using a text editor like notepad. If you’re using Notepad, make sure that the file extension is .BAT and not .BAT.TXT when you save the file.

@echo off

ldifde -f groups.ldf -d "cn=GroupName1,ou=myOU, dc=mydomain,dc=com" -l member -s mydc1

cscript modify.vbs //Nologo > "GroupName1.txt"

ldifde -f groups.ldf -d "cn=GroupName2,ou=myOU,dc=mydomain,dc=com" -l member -s mydc1

cscript modify.vbs //Nologo > "GroupName2.txt"

.

.

.

ldifde -f groups.ldf -d "cn=GroupNameN,ou=myOU,dc=mydomain,dc=com" -l member -s mydc1

cscript modify.vbs //Nologo > "GroupNameN.txt"

Here the two lines starting with LDIFDE and CSCRIPT are repeated for each distribution group in the active directory. As an example, I have shown how to write the script for my distribution groups named GroupName1, GroupName2 and GroupNameN, where they represent the display name of the individual distribution groups in your AD. In this example, all the distribution groups are placed in the OU named myOU. If your distribution groups are scattered in separate OUs, take care to give the complete LDAP path in the –d switch. Also, in this example, I assume the AD domain name as mydomain.com (represented by dc=mydomain,dc=com in this code snippet) and the domain controller as mydc1. You will need to change these parameters in your script to reflect actual values.

The function of each iteration in the batch file is to extract (using LDIFDE) each distribution group into an LDIF file named groups.ldf. The groups.ldf file is a temporary file. The next statement (cscript modify.vbs) invokes the modify.vbs script (described below). The modify.vbs script works on the groups.ldf file to produce meaningful output.

Step 2:     Write the MODIFY.VBS file. Again you can use Notepad. You may not need to make any changes to the below code. This file opens the groups.ldf file created by LDIFDE in the batch file you created in step 1. It then extracts only the display names of each member of the group and places it into a new text file. The text file containing the group members is created automatically and is given the name of the distribution group from which the users were extracted. If the file already exists, it is overwritten automatically every time you run the script.

Dim objFileSystem, objInputFile

Dim strOutputFile, inputData, strData, strTemp

Const OPEN_FILE_FOR_READING = 1

' output filename

strOutputFile = "groups.ldf"

Set objFileSystem = CreateObject("Scripting.fileSystemObject")

Set objInputFile = objFileSystem.OpenTextFile(strOutputFile, OPEN_FILE_FOR_READING)

' read everything in an array

inputData = Split(objInputFile.ReadAll, vbNewline)

For each strData In inputData

    if Mid(strData, 1,2)="me" and len(strdata)>10  then

        strTemp=Mid(strData, 12, InStr(1, strData,",",1)-12)

        WScript.Echo strTemp

    end if

    if Mid(strData,1,2)=" C" then

        strTemp=Mid(strData, 5, InStr(1, strData,",",1)-5)

        WScript.Echo strTemp

    end if

Next

objInputFile.Close

Set objFileSystem = Nothing

WScript.Quit(0)

Step 3:     Run the ExportDL.bat file. Once execution completes, see the folder where you put the above two files. You should see that you have new text files with the names all your distribution groups.

Clear users and passwords on Windows systems

09/19/2007

This article describes how you can clear usernames and passwords that are cached on a Windows-based computer.

Overview

Windows caches usernames and passwords in a secure manner. These include domain credentials and credentials that you type in when you try to access shared resources, when you click the Save Password feature. For more details on stored usernames and passwords, see this Microsoft KB article.

Procedure

To clear cached credentials on a Windows-based computer:

  1. Open Command Prompt.

  2. Type the command:
    rundll32.exe keymgr.dll, KRShowKeyMgr

  3. The Stored Usernames and Passwords are shown and you can remove the ones you don't need. This includes Microsoft .net passport account passwords.

New features in Vmware Workstation 6

09/11/2007

What are the new features available in VMware Workstation version?

VMware Workstation has a lot of new features to offer. Here is my short list:

  • USB 2.0 support & support for iPods - that means you can install iTunes in your virtual machine! You can even transfer files at higher speed from external hard drives and other USB2.0 devices.

  • Virtual Guest activity record and playback - this essentially gives you the ability to take a snapshot, keep taking continuous tiny snapshots, stop recording, playback those tiny snapshots like a movie, stop the playback at any time, and return control to you. If you think of a moment, I am sure you can come up with a number of benefits to this feature in your own environment.

  • Support for Windows Vista as a Guest VM

  • ACE Authoring - this allows you to create virtual machines that you can deploy virtual machines to users and have then run on VMware Player. The benefits to ACE are the security features for those VMs. The creator can tweak the VMs they are distributing with all sorts of networking and security options.

  • Pocket ACE - the ability to deploy a virtual machine to a portable media device

  • Laptop battery aware - Workstation Guest OS systems are aware they are running on a laptop and recognize the battery status.

  • Automatic Upgrade of VMware Tools - with version 6, you can configure Workstation to automatically upgrade the VMware Tools on each virtual Guest OS

  • VNC Management of Guest OS - includes a VNC server management option for every VM Guest OS that can be configured with a new GUI, here is a graphic:

How can the features of VMware Workstation help me?

Here are 5 ways that VMware Workstation can help you in your day to day life as an IT Pro (in no particular order):

  1. Patch testing - whether it is application or OS patch testing, by having the snapshot manager, you can apply your patches, test the results, then "snap-back" to the state of your Guest OS before the patch was applied

  2. Private network Anti-Virus testing - have you ever wondered if your AV software is working? Well, you don't want to introduce a virus onto a real machine on your network but with VMware Workstation, you could easily isolate a machine on a private network. You could then take a snapshot of that machine and introducing a virus to test your AV software. After testing, you could "snap back" to the state of the Guest OS before it was ruined by the virus.

  3. Private network Production Server testing with Teaming - you could create Ghost images of a few of your production servers, move them to private network virtual machines, use VMware Teaming, and be able to start & stop them all at the same time, as a group

  4. Upgrade Process Activity Recording - have you ever had a huge upgrade to perform that involved lots of steps? what if you could record the entire process, then jump back to any point in that process and start from that point forward? That would be pretty powerful! That is something you could do with the new VM Guest activity recording & playback.

  5. Create videos of activities on a virtual Guest - say that you want to train someone on how to do anything inside an operating system - upgrades, configuration, application installation, etc. With VMware Workstation, you could create an AVI video file of anything you do in your virtual machines and share it with others.

Summary

In summary, VMware Workstation is, in my opinion, the most powerful desktop virtualization package available. The new features in version 6 just "up the ante". While it isn't free, like VMware Server is, Workstation has enough features to justify the cost. The more I use virtualization software, the more I find uses for it. It has gotten to the point where I don't know what I did without it. Try out VMware Workstation and I think you will come to the same conclusion.
